Tandem is part of surfing's heritage that embodies the spirit of Aloha that's too often missing from the lineup today. This is surfing as the Kings and Queens imagined it: Buff dudes and toned ladies performing gracefully acrobatic maneuvers in glassy overhead conditions.
Narrated by Steve Boehne and his wife Barrie, Tandem Surfing: Keeping The Tradition Alive documents the early years of tandem surfing through it's post-war heyday and into the modern era, with tons of killer action. Some of the heaviest footage is of tandem teams training by bombing hills on new-school longboard skateboards; the consequences are apparent and gnarly. Finally, the wipeout section alone is worth the purchase, with tons of groans and "Oh, No's!" to be elicited. Classic stuff.
In short, the sport of surfing deserves to tip it's hat to Bob Torrez for keeping a tradition that's been largely overlooked, but is athletic, elegant and classy, alive. Round up the nearest cute girl you can find and go for a tandem surf--it'll be a date she won't forget!
